Good evening all,

I am looking for government grants and I do not know exactly where to start. I looked on the internet but a lot of the websites I go to seem to be fake or I have to purchase some kind of program to view “free applications for grants“. Any idea's? Please help!

Thank you all so much for your help. :-)

EDIT-I've already asked this question in another discussion board, just looking for different answers.

  1. The easiest way to get government grants for school is to fill out a financial aid application at FAFSA.  You fill out the report based on your taxes annually.

Your school gets the info automatically, and they determine if your eligible for grants.  It is free to file and you can do it all online.  If you need help you can call the website hot-line or your school.

If you are under 24, are not married, or don't have a kid, your a dependent.  As a dependant, you need your parents tax information too.  Your parents will need to fill out there own application for you to get grants.

           Good luck.

  2. As far as government grants go, those are determined by you FAFSA. After you fill out your FAFSA, you're expected family contribution (EFC) Depending on how low your EFC is,you might qualify for a PELL grant or a Federal Supplementary Equal Opportunity Grant, which is for people with a VERY low EFC. Depending on how rigorous your high school record was or how well you did in your freshman year of college, you might qualify for the Academic Competiveness Grant (ACG). If you're an engineering or science major, or you're majoring in a language deemed 'critical' to national security (like Arabic or Chinese) you can get a SMART grant. I also think they have something for teachers but I can't remember what it's called

  3. Check out Federal Student Aid Web Site or FAFSA http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

I suggest you explore all federal funding and grant options at the Federal Student Aid website http://federalstudentaid.ed.gov/

You may also want to read the Handbook of the Pell Grant -- this is an 86 page document that contains everything about the grant

    http://ifap.ed.gov/sfahandbooks/attachme...

Or you can call the Federal Student Aid Information Center http://www.ed.gov/programs/fpg/gtepfpg.p... at 1-800-433-3243 and ask them if there are any programs for you

Aside from FAFSA http://www.fafsa.ed.gov  and Pell Grant http://www.ed.gov/programs/fpg/index.htm...  , you may want to explore private foundation grants

    Also check out Fastweb http://www.fastweb.com

For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center's Foundation Grants for Individuals Online http://gtionline.fdncenter.org . It's a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) and their opening blurb says that the database is ideal for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices." You may be able to find grants from private foundations.

  4. One legitimate site is FastWeb.com    They do NOT charge you.  You fill out some information like what types of scholarships/grants you are looking for and what kind of major you are looking to obtain.  They have a vast amount of current scholarships that they will pull up for you, along with the links to the actual companies.

    Hope this helps,

    Tex
