Help with fleas and kennel cough.?

My dog has just returned from staying with a dog sitter and now has kennel cough and fleas. The lady told us to firstly treat the kennel cough with Benylin, is this ok? Are there any side effects to using Benylin.

For the fleas, even though she has just had her monthly treatment, we are going to do it again. Will this clear them up? We have so far only found 6, so I understand that she isn't infested with them, but obviously we want to stop them from further developing.

Any advise will be much appreciated.

  1. Gosh, I'd be inclined to say don't use that dog sitter again!  Has your dog not been vaccinated against Kennel Cough?  All reputable Kennels and dog sitters should insist on seeing your dog's vaccination certificate to make sure that the dogs in their care are safe from illness.

Anyway, my advice will be like most other posters on here; i.e. never give human medication to dogs (so no Benylin please) and use a systemic flea treatment like Frontline (drops that you pop onto the dog's neck) which will stop the lifecycle of the fleas and eggs.

With regards to the Kennel Cough, you must seek vet advice immediately and also get your dog vaccinated as soon as possible against further attacks and other diseases (parvovirus etc.).

  2. First of all do not take your dog back to this place lol!!!  And indeed, it might be worth reporting her, although I'm no fan of the RSPCA

Second.  You cannot 'treat' KC.  It's a virus.  You can however treat the symptoms and actually Benylin is one of the treatments of choice.  Be advised by your vet as to dose, but using a child's dose should be okay, without knowing what breed/size your dog is.  If the symptoms are severe enough, and remember, it's puppies and the elderly who are usually affected the most, she may need antibiotics. But this may clear without the need of a vet.  You will have to judge how ill she is!

If you do go to a vet, PLEASE leave her outside in your car until the vet is ready to see you.  KC is highly contagious and you will be doing others a huge favour of you do not sit with her in the waiting room.  And did you know, this virus can still be passed on for a week or more after the symptoms have stopped.  It is rife in some areas of the country (UK) right now and if only people would keep their dogs away from others, it would help.  Puppies can, and do die from this.  Also, although jabs can help, this virus mutates and you may think your dog is protected, when it isn't!!  And there are two forms of protection too - one via jabs and the other a spray in the nose.  But that still leaves any number of variations of the virus - it's like our flu virus.  Unfortunately.

Fleas - I'd say treat again - and that includes your place, car, where she's been ...... six on her - yoiks what kind of place is this woman keeping?  I'm scratching at the mere thought.

    Hope the KC clears up.

  3. Easy take the dog to the vets. Benylin wont do any good get the proper medication  and get some frontline for the fleas all the others are c**p

  4. Get advise from your vet about flea treatment, my vet explained the cycle of a flea had to be broken. Lots of hoovering, sprays and powders. I became obsessed in getting rid of them. It did work in the end.

  5. Firstly- your dog should have been vaccinated against KC before going into a boarding establishment. And the stupid women taking your money for looking after your dog should not have allow her to board without the KC vac. These sort of people really annoy me as they have no idea about running a boarding kennels or dog sitting and are just out to make money out of peoples dog's.

Don't give it Benylin. You will need to go to the vet and get a course of antibiotics and while you are there you may as well get the fleas sorted. Don't give a dose of frontline as this only acts when the fleas bite- your dog will need to be sprayed, as will your house and car now.

Then come home and report this women to the council and RSPCA. I doubt she has a license to run kennels and she obviously has no standards for taking dogs in and makes them live in grotty conditions.

  6. kennel cough can be a huge problem get her to the vet ASAP and isolate her from other dogs =]
