Question:

Help with girth mark?

I tighten my western girl on my saddle with a leather strap. The problem is, when my red and white paint sweats, some of the red leather color rubs off on his fur. Noe he has two reddish spots behind his shoulders. Does anyone have a good product or recipe to get rid of these spots?

  1. DO NOT SHOW SHEEN A UNDER THE SADDLE OR GIRTH/CINCH AREA!  Its a safety thing, think about it would you put cooking oil on your floors?

As for the color...just use a good whitening shampoo!

  2. There's a purple bluing shampoo for getting out stains you can use on horses.  Try that and if you're showing halter, try covering what's left up with cornstarch.

As for using nylon for a latigo strap?  Nooooooooo I've seen more nylon galls on horses that I ever have leather latigo.  It has NO give to it and can get pretty stiff with sweat.

  3. wash with whitening shampoo...  and next time put a fleece girth cover on

  4. Hello,

We have 7 paints too.  My sons saddle just did the same thing to his paint.  Try washing it with bluing.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, it is only cosmetic and won't hurt your horse.  IF anything it just shows everyone else that you actually ride your horse!

I PREFER the leather over the nylon.  Leather gives and nylon doesn't, which I think is more comfortable for the horses.  We actually would switch any saddles on our ranch to leather from nylon.

    KEEP up riding!

  5. Try a little turpentine dabbed on a rag.  It smells bad but will not burn the skin.  I would then wash it off as best I can because you do not want the smell on you.

  6. Can you use a fleece cover or a leather girth instead?  The color is just going to keep coming back after you ride him and if it bothers you then you need to change the girth so it will prevent this from happening.

  7. A good washing works, fleece covers work great. Condition the saddle well.

  8. I would think that just about any shampoo would remove them and a good application of show sheen before saddling would help to avoid the permanent stain.  I would suggest that you buy a nylon tie strap.  They are inexpensive and are much easier to tie and don't stain.
