Question:

Help with health insurance?

I am about to quit my job, which means I will lose my health insurance benefits (and don't try and convince me to stay, I've spent a year being miserable here with it).

My question is, how do I keep my health insurance? I know I can be COBRA'd if I had continuous coverage for the past 18 months. I've been on this plan for 12 months and had coverage before that, so does that count, or is it a break in plans?

I have depression, but not so bad that I can't work, etc. I do need to be on health insurance, though, in case something awful happens.

  1. You can shop around for insurance.  When researching health insurance you might want to try and bookmark this site for research information, news, articles, insurance quotes, companies, links and more. It should have the resources to help you with your question.

  2. You don't need 18 months to qualify for COBRA. There is no time limit. The only qualification is you must have been enrolled in the plan when you worked and there must be 20 or more employees on the plan. If there are fewer than 20 they may or may not offer it to you. The 18 months is how long you can be on the COBRA plan.

The employer must notify the plan within 30 days after you quit and the plan must send you an election notice within 14 days after it received notification. You then have 60 days to accept the plan but must pay the premium back to the day you quit.
