  1. vinegar, that's what my mom used to use on me when i was a child

  2. You need to go to the doctor and get a prescription shampoo, you also need to clean everything not just "spray" furniture toys, pillows, sheets, blankets everything that the children touch.  OTC and home remedies are not going to work.

  3. vinegar

  4. Rubbing alcohol spill it all over their hair and heads they will burn a little in their eyes but will be fine. The lice will be toast This will work cover their eyes with tissues do this in the empty tub. Then cold shower

  5. I am absolutely astonished and slightly disturbed at the incredibly misinformed advice being given for this question.

I know exactly what you are going through and the people here answering obviously, do not. When my gorgeous niece came home with a dose of head lice from school, we were all quietly horrified, to say the least. I think we did quite well to contain how we felt, but in our own way we never really expected or were prepared for how much it was going to affect all of our lives.

The ONLY safe way to get rid of head lice permanently is to use a totally natural alternative to the chemical preparations then use prevention methods such as hairspray and tea tree mixed with water in a spray bottle every day to ensure they never return.

You should away from chemical head lice treatments. Before you listen to anyone advising you to use a pesticide treatment please consider the following:

No chemical head lice treatment is legally allowed to be labeled as 'safe' as every insecticide is a poison.

If a lice treatment does not work once it is not going to work twice, in fact the lice that live will breed into a whole new batch that are resistant to that chemical.

Read these articles and try to find a natural remedy containing Neem oil as this renders the lice unable to breed therefore making it impossible for them to build up a resistance.

    Good luck, we've been there.

  6. It takes a long time and but cornmeal. You mix the cornmeal with water to make a paste the put a lot of the chids head. You then take each strand of hair and pull/slide the cornmeal off. I guess you can have a pail of water to wash off your hand after each strand. I have very thick hair and remember my grandma doing this to me when  i was little.

  7. Apparently tea tree oil works -- but I would think more as a preventative. You'll have to dilute it (with some oil would work)... this will also help by keeping the hair a bit oily, which keeps nits from sticking. Squeaky clean hair is easier for the nits to hang on to...

Sorry 'bout the nits. I think we all feel your pain.

  8. I've had to deal with it in my own home and at school.  Vaseline works, but is a mess!

Mayonaise, NOT Miracle Whip, left on for 2 hours (or overnight), then combed through with the nit comb...very important.  Shampoo and rinse with vinegar. The vinegar loosens the nit's/egg's adhesive from the hair shaft.  Rinse the comb and comb again.

Believe it or not, using a little hair spray, gel, mousse, etc. can help the nits to NOT be able to attach as easily to the clean hair.  Contrary to belief, clean hair gets lice easier than dirty hair!

Repeat this every week, for several weeks.

Put pillows, comforters, etc. through the dryer.  You can also bag them for a couple weeks, in airless bags, like garbage bags.

For sofas you can get the spray for lice to kill them, vacuum before and after!  Place a sheet over them temporarily and change it often.

For beds, and bed pillows, place the zippered, plastic mattress covers on them, that way you only have to deal with the sheets. They will die of no where to go.  Also, it will not let more eggs to get inside.

    Good luck!

  9. well lavender extract helps keep them away...every time there is a alert at school, daycare or daycamp I wash there hair with this lanverder soap, that has a very strong lavender smell too it and so far so good...you have to take the pillows from the couch and put them in garbage bags, tie them up and put them outside for a few days...have you tried cat and dog flea spray on your furniture maybe that may work....and remember some people are prone to lice no matter how clean there heads are....

  10. for your son-shave his hair as short as you can go.  my daughter and sons had it a few years ago.  my boys we shaved their heads real close.  that way there was nothing for the eggs etc to live in.  and for my daughter-we died her hair with over the counter hair color.  i heard that it helps.  so between the otc shampoo and the hair dye-we got rid of them.  plus there is a spray that you can use for furniture etc.  look for it where you buy the otc shampoo.  good luck to you

  11. I have tried everything under the sun and the ONLY thing that worked for us is tea tree oil.

You put regular amount of shampoo in your hand, put 3 drops in it and wash hair. Rinse and wash again without it.

    It smells VERY strong.

Then, towel dry. Have child sit in chair with a towel around neck and shoulders.

Comb hair out well and part in small sections, using a nit comb to comb the lice out. Rinse comb in a glass of water occasionally.

Keep a spray bottle of water nearby to keep hair wet. It's easier to comb them out when hair is wet.

Do this every other day until you see no more lice.

Even after this, keep checking the hair for lice every day.

ALso, for girls hair, keep in a ponytail all the time till lice is gone.

  12. Vaseline and wrap the head in plastic wrap.  That is what I heard, never tried it.  As far as the furniture, vacuum vacuum vaccum.  Sorry about the bugs, I hate them.
