I am being home schooled soon, I'm in 8th grade. I don't know anything about it, can you please inform me? Who checks our homework? Do we buy separate books or cd's that teach us? (I'm doing independent studies) How do we inform the school? Where do we go to tell the school district that I'm being homeschooled? Where do I take the SAT's? (california) Please include other information. I can't find from google about these things, please help.

  1. I homeschooled my daughter from 10th thru 12th grades.  I checked her homework myself, used guides provided by the people I purchased her books from.  We used cd's and internet for many things, and daily life for some lessons as well.  You need to check your local laws, there are different ones for each state and we were in Tennessee.  There should be website links specifically for that at the california dept of education site.  I found www.hsc.org and www.californiahomeschool.net seemed to have a good deal of information on them.  Also, your parents should check out www.hslda.com for important legal information about their responsibilities as far as the government is concerned.  Homeschooling can be a great way to get a much better education if used correctly.  I hope you enjoy it!!

  2. Hmm, I think your parents should be helping you research this.

From what I understand, your parents will be grading your work. They can either buy you textbooks and workbooks, or take out educational books from the library. The school district should have someone who can help you with whatever paperwork you need to do. And you can take the SATs at any place that offers them, usually a local high school, college, or testing center.

  3. California requires it must be an Accredited program.

As for the SAT you take it privately and pay for it.  Private SAT tests are commonly avaialble at various sites, inlcuding school sites.  So long as you pay you can take it.

Even public schoolers have to pay.  It's not a free test.

  4. Most importantly, check out Home School Legal Defence Association (www.hslda.org) for the legal requirements for your state to homeschool. There are variations in these requirements differ from state to state.

Since you are going to be doing independent studies, you will need to buy educational books, workbooks, or software. Although there are alot of free resourses on the internet. There are free workbook pages, e-textbooks, and some government sponcered educational websights that have free materials.

Also it would be a good idea to find a local or online homeschooling group. The homeschool groups are there to support each other and help others who are just starting out homeschooling. There are some homeschooling groups that have a yahoo group page.

  5. I am a homeschool graduate. Your parents should be the one asking this question in the first place. One of the  easiest programs to use is from Abeka Book, they have a website. For a more classical based education, infused with a generous amount of Latin, check out veritaspress.com

Speak with your local homeschool group. I was affiliated with Family Christian Academy, they sent my grades in to whatever government agency, etc.
