Help with ideas for meals while recovering in hospital (after child birth)

i'm 36wks pregnant, as much as i would like to plan when and where i go into labor i know thats impossible. i'm trying to get things rounded up and together beforehand so that i don't have to leave it for my husband to do. try as he might, he usually ends up making a mess out of things. he tries really hard to help, but he just isn't that much help. his idea of doing laundry is throwing everything in together, no matter what color or type of material. when he balances the check book, its such a mess i don't even know where to begin (i have no clue how he can make heads or tails out of it!!).

he told me he will be glad to take care of things when i'm in the hospital, including cooking for himself and our 4 year old son. again, he tries hard, but he's not much of a cook. he burns everything, and feels that he needs to add hot peppers to everything he cooks. his favorite food is chili and when he makes it he always makes a mess, and forgets that our son does not like it. if i don't get some meals together beforehand, my husband will either burn every pan i have until its no longer able to be used, or end up eating out every day, 3 meals a day. i really prefer my family not eat out 3 times a day for 3 or 4 days in a row.

outside of spaghetti and meatballs, what are some meals i can make and freeze for my family to heat and eat, and not have to worry about my husband cooking?

(again my husband tries, and i give him credit for trying, but he isn't much of a cook)

  1. How about lasagna....he can just stick it in the oven.

    Soup can be frozen

  2. Cottage / Shephards pie - layer of mince, layer of veg, then add some gravy to it - then layer of mashed potato - freeze, and reheat in oven for 1 hour at 200 degrees

Lasagne - homemade always tastes better

  3. Shepherds pie and casserole freeze well. Outside of cooking, there are a lot of healthy convenience foods that you can buy such as stir-fry vegetables and egg noodles. You can buy chicken b*****s already pre-cooked and chopped up, buy some pasta noodles and alfredo sauce in the refridgerator section of the grocery store and all you have to do it heat everything up. Buy easy things like pre-washed and bagged salads. Other veggies can also be purchased pre-washed and prepped which saves a lot of time. Quick meals like tacos take very little time to prepare. If your son is dexterious he can even help grate the cheese and shred the lettuce. I don't know how your family and friends are but you can also give the word to them that you are looking for a little help and a prepared meal would be much appreciated instead of gifts.

  4. Sounds like my partner down to a T.

Keep in mind though although he might only have to heat up the ready made meals they can still burn so make extras just in case and write the cooking instructions on the container.

You could make up some Taco meat and freeze it and all hubby as to do is heat up the shells and chop some extra's for it. So make some Nacho meat and they can have nacho's.

You could make up some mini pizzas for them

Here are some links to some good easy meals to make

  5. Honestly, I think you're being harsh on your husband. I was the same way until I realized that I just can't do everything myself. Teach him how to sort laundry and how to cook without burning food. But, as for meals to freeze, you can do just about anything.

  6. Well, I would think your husband would be capable of making soups and such. There's not a whole lot of ways to burn it... you'd have to be really good at bad cooking. :) --- You can practically freeze anything. Sandwiches, Bread, etc. When we have leftovers at my house and there's just too much of us to eat before we get sick of it... we freeze it... and it keeps until whenever we want to eat it next. --- Like I said... you can practically freeze anything. so, just make a list of what you're going to make... and then check to make sure it's freezable... instead of thinking just freezing.
