Question:

Help with ideas on environmental videos for high school club?

I am the president of an environmental club at my school. We are trying to promote recycling as well as other environmentally friendly things that everyday students can do (turning off a light, taking shorter showers, etc.) We want to spread this message by producing videos and putting them on the daily bulliten. Does anyone have any ideas on interesting and fun way this could be communicated? (we are thinking more skit-like)

  1. You may use: My Best Recycling Idea

Besides recycling the plastic containers, you can improve your work or home environments by bringing live potted plants indoors.

    Major items needed:

One empty plastic gallon container.   Tree Top Apple Juice is preferred, or equal in shape.

One empty plastic ½ gallon container.  Langers All Pomergranate Juice is preferred or equal.

Directions:  Lay the plastic gallon container on its side so the front label is facing up.  Place the empty plastic half gallon container on the label and with a sharpie pen outline the bottom on the Tree Top label and with a sharp knife carefully cut the outline.  Insert the half gallon into the hole until it rest on the back label of the gallon container.  Then mark and cut approximately one inch above the cut on the ½ gallon  to complete your planter container.  Remove and drill several ¼ inch holes on the bottom of the ½ gallon cut container for drainage.

Fill the cut ½ gallon planter with one inch of gravel before putting in good potting mix soil and live growing plant.  If you make two or more you can pour the water back and forth and not waste the water with the nutrients.

Go to NASA’s Clean Air Plant Study for the top ten plants that cleans the indoor air better than the rest.   http://www.zone10.com/tech/NASA/Fyh.htm

You can make a step by step environmental video from start with all the raw materials  to the finish product.  I'm sure your teachers can donate the potting soil mix in exchange for two live potted plants.  One for the house and one for the classroom/office.

In fact this is a good money making project to cover the cost of your video production.  You can open your video production with someone being covered with empty plastic containers.  This person is actually representing our planet earth and acting like he's drowning in plastic.  He's yelling "HELP ME!  HELP ME! I'M DROWNING IN PLASTIC!"  Then to the rescue comes Super Environmenal Man with all his helpers to save the Mr. Planet Earth.  And you can use my . " My Best Recycling Idea" to complete the production.  You can have a production line of students to make the end product.  You have to give the production line students names.  Mr./Ms. Marker,  Mr./Ms. Cutter,  Mr./Ms. Driller,  Mr./Ms. Planter., Mr./Ms. Inspector.   Good luck with this project.

  2. Here what looks to me like a good example. I thought it a good one to share with you anyhow. It is about the full path of consumer stuff from extraction  to the dump.

It could lead to a discussion of the qualities of living with less consumption afterwards.

    Good luck with your project!!.

  3. Be really bold and introduce folks through a pop video on planting trees or shrubs to recycle carbon!  Cool stuff and really works.  Plus you get to watch your "carbon trap" grow and thrive for many many years.  Really cool and no one is talking about it.

  4. Do a competition to see who can come up with the best idea for recycling ideas and give the winner a prize of with a solar powered or water powered watch or clock (find on ebay for $20)

    Go Girl!
