I am trying out a 4-month old kitten from the humane society to see if i would like to adopt it, and it's a great cat except for one problem. Every morning, she waits until someone comes downstairs, and then she poops and pees in the same spot behind the couch. She has used the litterbox before, so i know she knows where it is, i just don't get why she doesn't p**p and pee IN her litterbox first thing in the morning. how can i fix this??? i've been using a cleaner and scrubbing the carpet really well to get the p**p and pee out, but it's a pain to do every morning!!

  1. She may be marking her territory and it could be a temporary problem until she becomes used to your home.  You can purchase deterrent spray from any of your local pet stores (speak with a sales associate to see which is best) that will discourage her from using the bathroom in that spot.  She may also have an issue with the litter your using, she may not be used to it although she uses it some.. see what kind of litter the Humane Society uses.  She could also have a urinary tract infection.  I would bring the problem up to the Humane Society and see if they would be willing to get her checked by a vet for any UTI problems.  Good luck :)

  2. Just scrubbing the carpet won't get the smell out! Your kitten can still smell the place that it last used the bathroom on your carpet! You have to use a urine odor eliminating product. For Example

There are many others, so find one that is convenient for you!

also, if the kitten poops scoop up the p**p and place it in the litter box to him encourage her to use it in the morning! If you see her doing this you can also clap your hands and say No! Cats don't like loud noises! Or use a spray bottle filled with water to discourage her. Also I gave my kitten treats when he used the litter box to encourage him to use it more often instead of our carpet!

    Good Luck!

  3. Make sure that she can get to her litter box easily, keep it on the same floor as her, so she doesnt have to climb steps to get to it as that can discourage some kitties, also try putting the litter box in the corner that she is using as her potty. If and when she poops outside of her litter box pick up the p**p and place it in the litter box, then take you kitty and put her in the litter box and let her smell it out, she should know what to do from there. Good Luck, And Thank you for considering adoption.
