Question:

Help with knitting a scarf....

So my brother is starting college ball in a few weeks and I thought it'd be fun to have a scarf in the school colors. I need to find a good grey yarn and also a navy blue yarn, and make a multi-colored stripe. I wanted to try a new yarn, other than the ones at my local joanns and Michaels, but I don't know what a good scarf yarn would be...any thoughts? Also, anywhere I can go for an easy bi-color scarf pattern?

Thanks!

About good yarns for a scarf? Besides the usual wool and acrylics there are so many unusual yarns that are beautiful and you can make scarfs with pretty well all of them. Go to a good yarn store and you'll find them. I would not use cotton, does not drape too well.

  2. Google for the Harry Potter scarf, there are several patterns available on-line.  A nice superwash merino worsted weight wool will make a nice scarf.  KnitPicks has both gray and navy in superwash wools (superwash can safely be washed in the machine, although they should be hung to dry), that are fairly inexpensive.

  3. www.lionbrand.com has a lot of free patterns and they rate them as beginner, easy, intermediate etc. so you can pick one you are comfortable doing.  Look for a "fancy" yarn like "Homespun" or maybe a cotton blend or wool blend yarn.  There are many to choose from... Joann's and Michael's probably have the most variety... look for a yarn that you have never used before... keep in mind its for a guy and some of the fancy yarns may not look "man-ly" enough... maybe one of the wool blend yarns would be best like Lion Brand Wool-Ease (link below) it has a navy color and a couple of different greys (light and dark) and it's easy to work with.

  4. just pick a yarn that you love the feel of and is not itchy or irritating to the skin.  you should not use any yarn that felts otherwise the scarf will shrink and be more itchy.
