Question:

Help with landing my figure skating jumps?

For some reason, i keep landing my jumps on an inside edge, and everytime I happen to land my jumps on an outside edge, I loose my balance quickly.

Are there any exercises that could improve the way I land my jumps? Particularly off-ice; the ice rink is really far away and with the gas prices being so high, I don't go there too often. :|

By the way, I'm a beginner and I haven't really practiced jumps with my coach yet.

(My jumps = waltz jump and toe-loop.)

Thanks! :)

  1. what really helps with back outside edges (landing especially) is to make absolutely sure that you are not dropping your free hip. it should feel a little higher than your skating hip.

also make sure to stay square and stretch up and out.

practice good balance with your landing position off the ice. whenever you get to go to the rink, spend a little extra time on those back outside edges.

hope this helps and good luck!

  2. :((   I compleatly feel your pain with the gas prices!!! but as for the jumps there is a really great excercize: PRACTICE!!! as for the balance: a balance beam, just use the footing for an outside edge on the beam. (It sounds hard, but really, try it!)

  3. under-rotating maybe? but i dont know how you underrotate a waltz jump.

something could be wrong with your take-off too.

landings prettymuch will go in the right place if the jump is good. then you have to fight for them.

i dont think the problem is the landing exactly....it may be the rotation in the air or the take-off where you are messing up.

is your leg too curled around the other one?

are you opening up too soon?

    of course practice both off-ice!

you'll get a better feel for the jump.

and yes, toeloops are possible off-ice.

  4. I had the prob. a year ago.  Just don't look down and go as fast as you can.  Good luck.

P.S. it helps if you have your coach yelling at you,  LOL!

  5. For off-ice :

In your room, or somewhere spacey, pretend to do a very very tiny waltz jump. the jump isnt important at this stage. what were after for is the landing. make sure ur chin is high, you lean forward just a bit, raise your arms and your foot is on the outside edge. another one is to jump off from a small height, you could probably stack some thick hard bounds books, then go into a landing position right away.

    ON ice :

do the same warmup excersises before going in. make sure ur laces are tight but comfortable. wear gloves. once ur in, do some forward strokings and forward crossovers, other words warm up first. then work on your landing. a good way is to do about 8 very very very strong back crossovers then do a landing position, as if you just landed a quad axel! stiffen your arms and also your stomach, chin up,arms raised a bit higher, foot to the side, not too much at the back, lean forward just a tiny bit and dont look down. you have to feel confident. dont mind the other people watching you. just keep doing this until you master it, then start to do some tiny waltz jumps, remember, were just after the landing first, work on the height and distance later.

i hope i helped you and gud luck!

  6. Perhaps it is because you are not getting all the way around. I used to be DEATHLY scared of landing jumps. So what I would do is land only a 1/2 way around, or something like that. When you are on ice try to gather more speed, pull in your arms tighter, and bend your knee when you land, and check your arms (If you are right handed that means your left arm is in front, and your right arm is in the back.)

But there is also a website called allexperts, and you can ask them your questions and they will answer.

When you are off ice try to do the jump. Go through it step by step, and pay attention to little details.

Don't worry, just gain confidence, and you'll be set!

  7. In the floor there is nothing you can do to practice your edges but i in the ice you should prectice your forward and backward edges in circles forming an 8 it will help you to keep your balance when landing. The waltz jump is landed in an outside edge help yourself with your arms that should be oulside your circle... right arm in front and left arm at your side. Then turn your body with your arms (outside the circle)

    I hope it helped you

    P.D if I made a mistake writing sorry i'm mexican :P

  8. It would do you more good to practise jumps with a coach.  Possibly, there's something wrong in your preparation for the jumps, or there's under-rotation (although how anyone can under-rotate a waltz jump is completely beyond me).  On the times you do land on your outside edge, check your shoulders so that you don't lean too much into the outside edge until you fall over.  If you allow your shoulders to be loose, they'll cause you to deepen your backward outside edge to the point you will eventually fall over.

  9. THe main thing you can do it just practice landing them off-ice. It helps more than you would think. And you can do it anywhere. I usually practice them right beofre I get on the ice. Also off ice just practice jumping up and doing your landing position. Then you can practice you landing position just glisdeing on the right edge and stuff when you are able to go to the rink and that will train your body to go on the right edge whenever you land your jump. Also practice your waltz jump on a circle. I am not sure if you do it that way but it may help.

    I Hope That Helps.
