Question:

Help with music studio latency issues!?

I've got guitar rig 2 on my computer, great program, very extensive and sounds great. The problem is this: I loaded it up onto my laptop to see if I could use is as an effects processor through my set up (my normal live setup) and had this "latency" issue. On my desktop I can set the latency to 1ms, but on my laptop I can only set it down to 7ms. This is really quite annoying and completely counter productive.

I started to realize that perhaps I am not fully understanding as to what latency does in the first place. I mean, obviously I see the results of pluck string, second later sound comes out. But what I am failing to understand is why is that feature there at all? Who would want to play with any type of latent delay? Why don't they just say "pluck string sound come out?".

Is there anyway around this?

Thanks for your help!

  1. Latency issues have to do with the speed and/or drag time which your computer can handle the program.

I don't have Rig 2 but I ran into the same issues with my DJ software. No matter how low/high I set the latency it never ran for long before freezing

I personally don't believe its the game options giving you difficulty (I can tell by the difference your PC behaves as opposed to your laptop) but your laptop processor-clock speed probably needs to be faster.

Most laptops unless they are newer models will run into this.

Desktops on the other hand are more robust and with some tweaking can deal with latency lag.

Try "cleaning" your laptop of any unnecessary programs or cookies. Do as much as you can to get it to run at optimum speed. If push comes to shove you may need a laptop with a faster processor.
