Question:

Help with my Niece's Guinea Pig.?

Okay. My sister bought a guinea pig for my niece. They don't live with me anymore. Anyway, I have a guinea pig too, so I told them everything they needed to know about caring for it. Including clipping their nails, feeding them etc.

I go by my sister's house to look at the guinea pig, and it appears to be that her nails are curling under. They aren't in her paw yet, but the are sideways now. I tried cutting them, but every time I go to clip it, the nail turns and I think I am hurting her. Do you have any advice that I can give my sister?

  1. The best idea would be a vet, but I know they can be extremely costly.

Your local pet shop, possibly even the one the guinea pig was bought from would more than likely help you out, and do it for you for free.

    Good Luck...

  2. I would cut the nails back a little at a time untill they stop curling over a period of time, secondly if you have an outdoor run for the pigs on the grass try to position the run so an area is on concrete or paved suface this will naturally keep the nails down in length failing all of that get to vets before they turn to far and penetrate the pads on sole of paw, if not you will have pigs with infection and some high vets bills to cure, do now please

  3. That's sad you need to tell her to go to the vet with that guinea pig. i personaly had 2 of them!!

  4. Its quite possible the quick has grown nearly to the entire length of the nail. What I suggest doing is setting up a regular cutting schedule (possibly every 3 weeks) that MUST be done religiously! Just nip the sharp point of her nail every time, don't go back too far of course , and always have QuickStop or corn starch on hand just in case, This regular cutting will get the "quick" to recede. Getting her nails back to normal is going to take quite some time, months and months. But this is the price to pay for neglect of these things. Best of Luck!

P.S. Most groomers are more than willing to clip pig's nails.

  5. Take it to the vet, They will do it for you.

  6. She HAS to have them trimmed. If you are unable to do it without causing her pain she needs to see a vet and have them clipped before they cut into her paws. Look around for an exotics vet but most likely a regular vet that you trust could do the job.

  7. My guinea pigs nails will occasionally do that.  It usually does not hurt them when you cut them just be sure not to cut too close.  When their nail gets closer to the skin it changes colors and turns sort of a pinky color.  Don't cut there, cut a little more out from it.  Good Luck!

  8. It won't hurt her but if you don't cut them now she will be in even more pain so either do it yourself or let your sister do it or take it to the vet who will do it professionally and as painless as they can make it.

  9. just shoot it in the back of the head. it won't know wat hit it.
