Help with my laptops contrast? ?

Hello everyone I have a compaq persario 900 and I turned it one today and my screen is really dark like I can see the out line of the start menu that's it and there is thee buttons f7 and f8 and they have a sun with up and down arrows on each of them and I tried pressing that up and it didn't do anything? Please help!

Sounds like the backlight or inverter has failed.

It'll need to be taken in for repair (if it's under warranty that should be free, if not...).
