Question:

Help with my law study/career? ?

I'm studying for the LLB part time, but I have been thinking to myself to go back full time so phoned a career adviser and seeing her later today. She said I still have a short time to apply for a university full time this year.

I don't know what to do, as with my part time course it takes longer but I'm getting qualifications as I go along such as certificates and diplomas. Can I do that if I go back full time?

I'm working in admin at the moment that isn't law related, but if my legal certificates and diplomas can help me with a law related job while I'm studying then I might just carry on part time, but if it won't then I'll just go back full time.

I don't know what to do or who I'm supposed to ask about it.

I'm a mature student in my late 20s.

I'm in Wiltshire (UK), but if I did go back full time, then where would be a good place to apply to? If I study in London, would I also have to move there? Or would it be possible to study in London but still live in Wiltshire?

  1. Suggestion:  Get the book "America's Greatest Places to Work with a Law Degree" - even though you are not american, it will still give you LOTS of good ideas.  You can obtain this book from a Used Book store and/or through Amazon.  It is written by Kimm Alayne Walton.

Suggestion:  Go into the field of Healthcare - even with your background.  LOTS of jobs in Healthcare.  Jobs in the field of Law are drying up FAST!!!

We simply have too many attorneys/lawyers - the law schools will not tell you this.

    Good luck.

  2. I have been in the same dilemma after finishing my LL.B. I always wanted to do LL.M...but after finishing my LL.B., I lost the feeling of being a student and surviving on very less money. I had no one to support me financially.

I really had to think about it. I also wanted a job which should be of some use to practice what I had learned at the Uni. Anyhow, work gives you a feeling of being financially independent and along with it doing what will help you get a better job later. You can always use your work experience later.

Right now I am working and doing Master of Business Laws in part-time. It doesn't give that feeling of satisfaction as you would get as a regular student but still I am working for my future only, even if its in part-time:).

If i was you, I would do the following:

    - I don't know how your financial situation is, but if you have to take loan to study full-time, then I would suggest that you keep working and finish your LLB in part-time. It will only give you a good feeling when you will be debt free even after finishing your studies and having good work experience.

    - If you feel your current job isn't relevant enough, then I would look for a job which will be easy to get like a combination of legal and administrative, like a legal secretary or anything int he similar trend. No idea what kind of jobs are available in UK as far as LLB students are concerned.

    - Taking the points mentioned above into consideration, you should make a wise choice. The feeling that it is taking too long might be coming from people around you. Maybe your parents, friends or others are asking you constantly or there is some other kind of pressure like you are thinking you are in your late 20s. Its better to prioritize things but don't take too much on your plate which you can't eat up and can't leave at the same time.

Write down the pros and cons of what you want to do and compare it what you are doing right now and see what is more gratifying.

I don't live in England, so I can't tell you which place or university would be the best there.

    Good luck!
