I just bought a home that has a pretty large lemon tree. The problem is all my lemons feel soft and hollow...or spongy. I have tons of lemons on there and even alot of new little (green) lemons. Why are they soft and what can I do to have firm lemons so I can eat them? Thanks for your help!!

  1. You may want to first find out if the place you bought it does stand behind what it sells and willing to refund or exchange. These lemons may be damaged from being old...damaged mechanically or by rot at the center.I would leave it in the container for awhile, pick the older bad lemons. If it seems over run with little lemons maybe thin by removing some of them. Then see if your next batch of mature fruit is what you expect it to be, if not you should return it.Remember its like squeezing produce at your local market...squeeze them at the nursery too.

  2. The large soft lemons are over-ripe.  Pick them off and discard them.  The new little green lemons should ripen just fine, and you'll have plenty for cooking and making lemonade with.

  3. Guessing the soft lemons have overwintered and have "Gone off".Pick 'em off,the little green ones should ripen up OK.
