Help with my lovebird

Hello, I purchased yesterday a lovebird and I would like to know what to do for him to trust me. I speak to him but he is still very shy and afraid of me. He bites sometimes as a warning to put my fingers away from the cage

Can you share with me your stories of how much time it took before your lovebird trusted you and came to you

thank you

  1. I am not sure how long it takes but it is natural that it is afraid.  Just hold it all of the time and make sure to say its name quite often.  My lovebird chirps when I say his name.

  2. my little girl took about 2 weeks to get used to my hand, check out http://www.parrotcentral.net/how_to_tame... its what i did and it worked just fine, goodluck!

  3. It depends on your birds personality. Was it a hand raised bird, or one you just bought in a pet store? A bird from a breeder that was hand fed, should only take a few days to get used to it's new home. One from a pet store though can be much more of a challenge.

Either way you only got the bird yesterday, you need to wait until the bird is used to it's new surroundings before trying to handle and play with it.

Lovebirds are all different, with the right technique you can have some that come around in a few weeks, I know of others that have taken over a year before their owners could pet them.

You need to just work SLOWLY at building the birds trust. Talking to it nicely while it's in it's cage, offering it treats through the cage bars, etc. Do not just try and grab the bird and have it try to get used to you that way. All you accomplish is scaring the poor bird and reinforcing the idea that you're scary and it needs to avoid your hands. Letting the bird come to you, is great as well. The bird can go at their own pace, and has the chance to go back to their safe spot (cage) if something frightens them. Lovebirds are very curious so it usually doesn't take long for one to want to see what you're all about as long as you're not continually scaring them.

There are multiple Lovebird forums online that can connect you with tons of lovebird owners-- http://www.lovebirdsplus.com/community/i...

is a good one, with lots of info and resources you can check out.
