For the first time ever I bought a black male Guinea Pig today and he is just sitting in his dome house. I don't have another little Guinea Pig buddy for him. How long will he just sit in his dome house for? Will he be okay without a buddy? When can I pet him and hold him? Please help me, I love Kurai already and I don't want anything bad to happen to him.

  1. Guinea Pigs like to get used to there sorroundings firsts. Just leave him alone for the first day. Dont play with him or pet him until he gets used to hsi new home. He will probably stay in his dome for about the whole day. Dont worry, I thought the same thing when I first got my guinea pig. But now he is very playful. Enjoy your new guinea pig, and if you need any more help, just ask me=)

  2. for the first answer guinea pigs are socail and like other guinea pigs but dont need them also when you first get your guinea pigs it is best to leave them alone as much as possible for the first couple of days. It is very tempting to keep picking them up and showing them to people but this is very stressful for them when they are in a new environment so please resist this until they have settled in.

Feed your guinea pigs at the same time every day. They will soon learn to assoicate the sounds of feeding with something nice happening. Ours squeak when they hear rustling and/or the frige opening. Also have times a couple of times a day when you give them treats.

  3. No it isn't that he doesn't have a buddy, although that would make it happier. It is probably because it is his first time in his new home. He has to get adapted first.

Make sure he is in a quiet room. Just give him time.

  4. You should read over http://www.guinealynx.info/ and http://www.guineapigcages.com/

Pet store pigs are usually sold sick so keep a close eye on him. You should ADOPT, not buy, him a buddy but make sure it is a male and he is healthy first. Pet stores often missex them too.

  5. This is totally normal. However, they can be so scared of their new environment that they will not eat or drink and can die. I had this happen to me when I got one from Petsmart. I now know not to buy any pet from a petstore. I don't want to scare you though. I have 5 others that all did the same thing but were fine later.

You need to leave it be alone, make sure it has water and hay and pellets and is in a quiet place. It would be great if it had a buddy. That would be the best thing for it. Once it starts to eat and drink and seems normal then hold it all you want.

  6. Guinea pigs like to hide and sit in small, covered places, like the little dome house. Your pig is normal. He'll come out to drink and eat, but otherwise he'll probably just sit and stare in his house all day, haha. He will be ok without another piggie and you can pet and hold him whenever you like. It's encouraged since it will help him adjust to his new home.

  7. Don't worry, that is normal guinea pig behavior. Guinea pigs are normally scared easily. Anytime you bring any type of animal home for the first time they will be shy and will need some time to adjust. Just think of how weird it may be if you were placed in a new home. Always talk calmly to him, make sure he knows that you are not there to hurt him. When you are coming near his cage I suggest talking softly so that he knows you're coming towards him. That way he won't be startled.

Getting him a buddy will definitely be good for him and I really suggest it. Guinea pigs are very social animals so they need to have interaction, if you choose to keep him alone, make sure he is out of the cage a lot and has things to keep him busy.

People get worried that if you get two guinea pigs then they'll become attached to one another and not you but that is far from it. I had 6 female guinea pigs all together in one cage and anytime I said their word for treats they would all squeak for it and they come right up to my hand when I go to their cage.
