Question:

Help with my new budgies?

I got 2 new budgies about 5 days ago (they're about 3-4 months old), and I was told to slowly start handling them after about 2/3 days. I did this, and although they seemed anxious, they let me do it, and they were okay. So yesterday, I decided to let them fly around my room. They were anxious about getting out of the cage, but once they got used to my room, they were fine. But ever since I put them back in the cage yesterday, they seem to be scared of me whenever I put my hand in the cage, or stroke or handle them, sometimes even pecking me. Have I done something wrong, and are they gonna stay like this?

  1. There are many ways to get a tame budgie. If you want them to stay flighted then you will have to get each bird it's own cage. Steps to keep your birds tame:

    1. Keep them in seperate cages (they can still play together)

    2. Learn about clicker training (youtube.com) and teach them in the morning. (basic things like step up, petting, flying to you on command)

    3. Spend as much one-on-one time with them as possible. Let them learn and explore things with you.

And, if these birds are not on a pelleted diet, they need to be. Seeds should only be eaten as a treat for training. Why? Because they are empty calories compared to pellets. Your budgies WILL become malnurished and die an early life. This is why seeds are just treats.

    Good luck with all this!
