Question:

Help with my platies?

I have two platies. They are in a 10 gal. tank. One of them started to bite my silver dollar, and eventually he died. Now it is biting the other platy whenever the other gets near it. I thought maybe it was because of ICK, but I put some medications for it in the tank. Now it is still biting the other platy.

Is this normal?

  1. I have 5 platies.  All of them are females.  I used to have males, the males were agresssive to the females, the smaller male and to my betta. Now that I only have females that is not a problem.  You can tell the s*x by looking under its stomach at its fin and with a female it is shaped like a triangle.  With a male it is pointy like a knife.  It may be that it is a agressive male.  They recommend at least two females per male to give the female a break from being chased.  If they are both males he could be picking on the weaker male.

  2. If you fish had or has ick/ich then it would have had white spots on their body.

Although, Platies are usually nice and peaceful fish, but chasing them around is a little unusual. Here's a site about Platys:

Hope this helped you. Good luck with your fish =]

  3. Yes platies are pretty agressive fish in the comunity tank.

ICK IS WHEN YOU SEE WHITE DOTS ON THE FISH. DONT ADD ICK MEDICATION IF THE FISH DOENST HAVE WHITE SPOTS OR DOT ON IT.

  4. Platty's are live breeder's, live breeding fish get aggressive when pregnant. I suggest you isolate her.
