Question:

Help with my red eared slider shedding?

I have 2 water turtles. One of them is shedding. He has done this before & then gone back to normal. I'm just wondering if it's because I changed his tank. I upgraded him to a 55 gallon tank with 2 filters. I treated the water & he has tube lighting & a basking light also. I feed him pellets, worms, and I put a cuttlebone in the tank b/c someone suggested that. Did I do anything wrong or is this normal?

I have another turtle in the same tank but she has never shed. Her growth is stunted. She had a near death experience once & never grew since. Is that why she doesn't shed? Because she doesn't grow? I'm confused.

Thanks everyone!

  1. Same thing with my res, 1 is growing and sheds a lot, the other one is still little!! I read that if they shed excessively it could be from over eating, that's what happened to mine, because she is a fat whale! Her shedding kind of looks a little like white fuzz! When I feed her a little less it goes away! Good luck with them

  2. Reptiles need to shed when they grow.  It's normal.  Giving them bigger tanks will allow them to grow larger.  I'm not sure why the female isn't growing.  But maybe putting her in a bigger tank will let her grow more.  make sure she is getting enough to eat too.  Maybe she is shedding minimally and it's going unnoticed?  I'm not sure.

  3. I think it is great that you have a bigger tank for them. It is normal for your slider to shed. I bought a shell and skin conditioner for my slider and it seems to work great. I put it on once a week.  The slider sheds when it grows, if your turtle isn't growing, it doesn't shed. Try giving more vegetables in the diet. Mine loves carrots and romaine lettuce.  I also give him flies and shrimp.  My didn't eat or grow a while ago. I put my lights on a timer and it helped a great deal. Good Luck I hope I helped.
