OK, so I have a cable connection with charter communications and I use a Motorola SB5101 surfboard cable modem. What I want to do is connect my Linksys wireless b Broadband router so I can use the internet wirelessly. the problem is that I already connected all the cables and set up my router, but I can't get an internet IP adress with it, what could be any possible problem with that? How do I get that adress? thanks!

  1. Ditch the wireless B router and at least get a G or possibly N router instead.  Why get stuck with a slow wireless connection when for $ 20 you can get higher speeds and greater security?

Take care of this problem first and when you plug your computer into it it should 'just work'.  :)

  2. First off reset the router, unplug it for about 30 seconds and it will reset itself.  If this doesn't work, go to "run" on your start up menu and type cmd and then the screen comes up type

    ipconfig /release

    and then

    ipconfig /renew

It's ipconfig SPACE forward slash release and same with the renew.

Restart your computer after you do this and if it doesnt work just get back into cmd at the prompt, type

    ipconfig

If your IP address starts with a 169. whatever, that is a false automatically generated by windows and you need to repeat the release.  If during the release it says that it cannot complete the command... email me and I'll walk you through it.
