  1. I was just at someones house that had a large red brick fireplace in their basement. They painted the wall with the fire place a red color that  matched the bricks. Do it in a semi gloss so it reflects the light back out into the room. Their mantel on the fireplace was a rustic dark walnut color and they used this color for the rest of the woodwork. The other walls were painted a creamy medium ivory with just a touch of gold to it. The floor had brown and tan sguare tiles in a pattern. They had a seating area with an area rug (use wool or one that is ok for by a fire) in front of the fireplace. It was really nice! Before they did the fireplace wall red the fireplace just looked like this huge thing, after it became part of a wall and more in balance.

  2.   Peace has some good advice on color  and as far as the tile goes look as tile w/ a scalloped /wavy edge in a stone look.. They look good and keep w/ your country look.. GL
