Question:

Help with planting my tomatoes?

I live in New Mexico and the temperatures are reaching up to 108 degrees during the day. Is it safe to transfer my plants outside? They are now about a foot tall. The package said to plant them after 6-8 weeks and it has been about ten. I'm just scared they are going to die because it is so hot.

  1. If your plants have been indoors all this time, it probably won't be safe to plant them outside right away.  I would put them outside on the east side of the house for a couple of days, where it is still cool in the morning, but will get afternoon shade when it's really hot.  If you have some straw, you can sprinkle it over the top of your tomatoes and around the pots, to provide some insulation.  When you plant them, I suggest you plant them deep, half of the plant underground, and half above.  Remove any leaves that would be buried by soil.  Covering it lightly with cheesecloth should provide some protection from the heat of the day.  Don't be discouraged if your tomato wilts and looks sick for a couple of days after you put it in; as long as it remains green, you will be amazed at the rejuvenative powers of the tomato.  Water it daily until it perks up and you notice new growth.  You can then start watering deeply, but infrequently, when the top 1/2 inch to inch of soil is dried out.
