Recently we have been receiving two to three calls per day from a private number. (caller id shows private name private number). Usually the callers leave no message but left one saying they needed to talk to my mom urgently and that they were calling from Wells Fargo. The callback number was 1-800-500-6130. My mom had a checking account and a credit card with WF three years ago but paid all balances on the credit and withdrew all money from the checking account and closed the account and card. She called back and asked them that if they wanted to communicate any information to her they would have to do so by mail and hung up. They have kept calling and every time we answer we say the same thing we will not answer unless wells fargo (if it is really them) communicates with us by writing. Did we do the right thing, what would you do in this situation. My mom isn't worried but I am. Help plz.

  1. Basically, you have absolutely no idea who or why they are calling.  Instead of telling them to communicate by mail, find out who it really is.  Actually speak to them.   It could be a telemarketer or it could be a collector with the wrong phone number.

If it turns out to be a collector, you will then know who to send the certified letter to telling them to cease and desist all contact -- assuming your mother has no outstanding debt.

  2. Your mom is doing the right thing. If the business they claim to have with her is legitimate, they'll contact her by mail.

Google that phone number and you'll see it's being used by telemarketers, not by a legitimate firm. I'd simply stop answering the phone when you see them on caller ID. They'll give up eventually.

  3. They aren't calling from Wells Fargo.  WF would not do business in such a fashion.  This is undoubtedly some collection agency which thinks your mother owes money.  Wells Fargo would certainly send paperwork relative to any valid scenario.

    Ignore them.
