My computer has slowed down dramatically, when my dell insprion 1501 goes into sleep mode, or when i close it and its been locked, the screen starts to get all pixely and starts to shake, once a week or so when I turn my computer on I get a blue screen that says my system has crashed and then it restarts. I dont know how to fix this other then to reinstall windows, and I dont have the disc that came with my computer, but I do have the xp disc. Windows xp has never been on this computer, do you need other discs for the drivers? i just dont want to ruin my computer more by messing up while install.

  1. If you freshly install from the xp cd then you need to download the all the drivers. It is recommendable that you download all the drivers from the vendor website and burn it into the cd/dvd and install window. But if you install the xp home edition then you have to activate the genuine activation from microsoft, you dont have to if you have xp pro.

  2. Before you go ahead and reinstall Xp try these tips to speed up your computer and free up space and memory for free:

Go to the Start Menu> Run

    Type in "appwiz.cpl"

    Uninstall whatever you don't need.

Next, go to Start> Run and type in "msconfig".

Go to the Startup Tab and uncheck everything you don't want to startup. If you want, you can uncheck everything, and your anti-virus will still restart itself when you log on.

Now go to My Computer> Hard Drive> Documents and Settings> [USER NAME]> Local Settings> and delete everything inside the Temp Folder. (This is a hidden folder so you will need to have "show hidden files and folders" checked in Folder Options) All the files in this folder are just temporary files that your Internet stored for certain websites.

Then go to My Computer> Hard Drive> Windows> Prefetch and delete everything inside it. This folder is like an cache for programs and should be emptied about once a month.

Next, you should install CCleaner, it will get rid of alot of temporary files on your computer. It also has a registry repair system, which is easily the best free one available on the Internet:

Another option is to try defragmenting your computer.

Go to the Start Menu and go to All Programs

Go to Accessories and System Tools.

Choose Disk Defragmenter and when it loads click defragment.

Next, go to Device Manger (Start> RightClick My Computer> Properties> Hardware Tab> Device Manager) and update all drivers.

Another thing I would say is to compress your files if you already haven't.

Open My Computer and right click on your hard drive

Check the Compress Drive button and let it do it's thing.

Finally, make sure your Hard Drive doesn't have any bad sectors. Go to My Computer> Right Click Hard Drive> Properties> Tools Tab> Check Now> Check both boxes and Start. It will ask you to reboot, so reboot. This will clear out any bad sectors on your Hard Drive.

These are short-term solutions however. the easiest way is to just upgrade the RAM on your system, but at least the ways above are free.

Now, for reinstalling Windows, go to your BIOS Settings (PRess F2 when turning on the computer) and make the primary bootup device your CD Drive. Now reboot with the CD in the drive and you will begin the installion of Windows XP.

It will take a while but shouldn't be too hard to go through, it's easy enough.

The only probelm you may have is that some of the drivers for your computer won't get installed, especially if the Windows CD you use isn't for your make of computer (Dell, HP, Compaq, etc).

If so, go to your computer's manufacturer's website and go to the "Support" section. There should be a link for drivers. You will need to know your computer's model, but once you enter that it will give you and option to download any missing drivers.

After that it should be smooth sailing. Let me know if there's any probelms with that and I'll try to help.

    Good Luck =]
