  1. A horse or cannon is simply a representation of more armies. A soldier is equal to 1 army, a horse is usually = 5 armies, and a cannon = 10 armies. Some variations have the horse = 3 armies and cannon = 5 armies.

When you take over a country, you have to move at least the number of armies of dice you rolled in attacking (rolled 3 dice, move at LEAST 3 armies, etc) but you must make sure to leave behind at least 1 army. Since a horse is equal to 5 armies, if that was all you had in the invading country, you would have to break it up into 5 soldiers (1 army each) and move however many you wanted.

Example: Kamchatka with 1 horse and 1 soldier (6 TOTAL armies) invades alaska who has 1 soldier(1 TOTAL army). Kamchatka player rolls 3 dice, alaska rolls 1 die, alaska loses. The kamchatka player can now move at least 3, no more than 5 armies into alaska. He chooses to move 5 armies into alaska, so he simply moves his horse. If he were to move just 4 armies, he would break the horse up into 5 soldiers, move 4 into alaska and leave the remaining 2 (1 from before) in kamchatka.
