Help with scanners/copiers -What do they do and difference?

Hello. I am new to all this and I wanted to be able to print at home for my work. I wanted to type documents and copy etc.

What does a scanner do and the advantages. I know what a copier does.

Any help appreciated.

Also, what are good to buy as I prefer to get info on here.

Copier just makes copies of  documents like any copier machine. the advantage of the scanners is that you can scan a document or a picture and save it in the computer for many uses like edit it, correct it and save it for future use to print it or send it to somebody by the email and more.

A scan is just a picture, so if you want to edit it you'll need to either edit it like a photo with PhotoShop or something or convert it to text with an OCR program.

Note, that OCR is not an exact science. You may end up with typos and you will certainly lose some formatting.

copier does what it suggests, takes an optical image of the original and sends it straight to a printer and takes an identical copy of the original

a scanner can do that and more

a scanner can send the optical image to the computer and store it there, so the image can be used elsewhere on the computer or printed at a later date. the scanned image can be sent by email or fax to somewhere else

saved images can be manipulated in other software eg photo editing applications, although the quality of most scanners isn't especially good unless you spend a lot on the scanner

some scanners have optical character recognition.. they can extract text from the original and save it in a form which can be used by other software such as word processing

a scanner takes a picture of a document and sends it to your computer so you can e-mail it or whatever.

Well a Scanner scans the document from the scanner to the computer..

and a copier, prints an exact version of the image!!
