  2. 6x, 18x, etc refers to the magnification power of the scope.  For instance, when looking through a 6x scope, the object looks 6 times larger than when viewed with the naked eye.  Some scopes have variable power, 6x-12x, which means that you can adjust the power of the scope.  The 40mm refers to the size of the objective lens.  Generally, the larger the objective lens, means that more light is allowed in the scope, enabling the user to see better in low light conditions.

  3. The first number (ex. 4x, 6x, 3-9x) indicates the power or magnification of the scope. A 4x scope for example would magnify what you're looking at by 4 times. The second number (especially if its in milimeters) refers to either the diameter of the scope tube or the diameter of the objective lense. In general the larger the diameter of the scope tube/objective lense the more light it will allow to pass through and the brighter the image will appear to be, especially in low light. In general the larger the scope tube/objective lense, the larger, heavier, and bulkier the scope will be.

  4. No need to expand upon the above answers, as they're right.

The magnification for your scope will depend upon how you're going to use it. Hunters who are in woods or heavy brush tend to favor lower-powered scopes such as the 3x because it gives them a wider field of view, and they're not going to be that far from their game.

Varmint hunters such as prairie dog shooters will favor scopes with higher magnifications, as they'll often be taking shots from several hundred yards at fairly small animals.

Target shooters, especially those involved in precision shooting, will tend to go for very high magnifications. 20X or 30X or higher.

If you look at the specifications for the scopes in the link below, you'll see that there are many factors to consider besides magnification. There's field of view (how much area you can see at a particular magnification), eye relief (how far your eye can be from the rear lens of the scope), exit pupil diameter, and more.

  5. just buy a 3x9x40

  6. 6X and 18X means that many times in magnification. The 40 refers to the Objective measurement.

One of the most common variable scopes is the 3-9X40. Three times magnification variable to nine times magnification and the objective is forty millimeter. Good for gathering available light.

  7. they are right. also a 3x9x40 is a small scope compaired to a 4-15x40. the higher the magnification the better the objest will appear.
