  1. Actually it's thread, not string.

If you possibly can, get a live person to show you. If you don't have a neighbor or grandparent who sews, there may be a sewing or quilting club in your area where they would welcome you and show you how your machine works. It isn't hard, but you have to have someone show you or it will just be one headache after another.

  2. I am assuming you are talking about a sewing machine, right?

Start with the bobbin.  on most modern sewing machines there is a bobbin wreeler pin.  thread your thread through a whole all ready available on the bobbin and place it on the pin.  slide the bobbin pin closer to the stopper.  (Some machines have a secondary button on the manual wheel to disengage the up and down foot.  Pull it out.  Press toe on peddle and wind your bobbin.

Once done place you bobbin in it's receptical under the pressure foot, leave open with a long tail from the bobbin.  And make sure you are set back to "0" and ready to go back to using the pressure foot.

next make sure yout thread is on it's spooling pin.  Pull your thread directly at the pressure foot end of the top of the machine.  There should be some sort of catch on the top of the machine that changes the direction of the thread.  Go with itand turn your thread 90 degrees so that it is coming at you.  Then feed your thread through the tensioner.  There should be a U shaped pattern all ready for you to zip right through.  As the pressure foot goes up and down, you should see a visible part of the foot moving along the top of the machine.  Feed your thread through it and that bends the thread back towards the pressure foot and the needle.  there maybe be other catches along the way, thread through them aswell.  then thread the eye of the needle.

hold the "dead" end or the free end of the thread in your hand while you manually turn the pressure foot wheel on the right side of the machine so that the machine "sews" without any material.  this will pull up the loop of bobbin thread.  Place both bobbin thread and spooling thread under the pressure foot with the material you are sewing.

Use your speed pedal in conjunction with your eyes and hands and voilla!  You are sewing.

if your thread bunches up or breaks for no reason, then your tensioner needs a different setting.  If it bunches up, the thread is too loose, if the thread breaks the tension is too tight.

Rinse and repeat.  With practice you will get it all goin' with an expert hand.
