Can anyone tell me your experiences with solar pool systems. I'm thinking of getting one for my 40,000 gallon pool. I'm looking for one that would mount on the roof and connect to my system. I live in New Mexico and not sure what to expect.

I already have a 400,000 BTU natural gas boiler for the pool, but this is very expensive to run.

  1. WE had a 40 when I was little. My Dad bought a heater , I think he used it once . It took like 300 bucks to heat it one time and that was in the 80"s.

then he came up with his own solar contraption. He made like a radiator with 3/4 copper pipe on the bathhouse roof on a sunny day the water coming in and out would jump 15 to20 degrees.

  2. I would call a local solar water heating installer and get some cost estimates.  They should be willing to come out and speak with you about installing a system, and probably provide references for other folks who have installed them.

I know that solar water heating tends to be fairly cost effective, and that the panels "work."  But I don't have a sense of the specific cost or square footage involved for pool heating.

I do know two good web sites to find local solar panels installers.  One provides written online references, so you know that others have had a good experience.  The other "certifies" installers, so you know that they know what they are doing.

A third web site that I would recommend is one that will show you any and all incentives or rebates for which you are eligible.  This might help you buy down the cost of your system.

I'm sorry that I can't provide more concrete information on these systems.   But I hope this will be a good place to start.
