All in all, i get integers, but today we got into an aspect that I don't get. For example..........-5(squared)(-3), shouldnt this equal -75 since -5 squared is a positive number and -3 is a negative number and therefore the answer is negative? However in my textbook it says that the answer is 75. PLEASE HELP....EXPLAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. if this is what the question reads:

    (-5)^2(-3)

then u are correct and the answer will be negative since (-5)^2 is positive and then is multiplied by a (-).

  2. i think so too but when i typed "-5(squared) in to the Ti-30X2S (calculator) it says the answer is 25.

  3. textbook wrong !!!??!!!!

  4. (-5)²(-3)=(25)(-3)=-75

    (-5²)(-3)=(-25)(-3)=75

It all depends on how it is written. If it is written as (-5)² this means the (-5)(-5) which is 25 but if it's written as -5² this means -(5)(5)=-25
