Question:

Help with split cage method for gerbils, please?

Okay, here we go!

Two male gerbils, one gerbilarium, one cage in the tank to split them up- NOT a divider.

They've been split for about ten hours now.

They barely seem to notice each other, and have been switched three times. They don't seem anxious at all about switching, and both sleep- not in each other's nests, but comfortabley on each side.

Is this a good sign?

  1. They seem to be progressing nicely. I'd probably wait the full week, it is worth it to be sure everything works out.

  2. thats fine not to worry gerbils get along fine u dont need to seperate them

  3. Yes this means you can soon intergrate them...if you choose to.

  4. it's a good sign...gerbils get along great so you can put them together if you want!!!!!!!!!

  5. How old are they?

If they are younger than, oh, four months, they may be able to have a peaceful introduction just like it is now.

Do you have anything with bars? Like a small carrying cage?

You could put the carrying cage in their large tank with the new gerbil, and see if when they sniff at each other they try and bite.

  6. Seems like a good sign.

I've heard that you should take things in steps though.  That you should let them sniff each other with bars to separate them in case of fighting, but I don't think you can do that, can you?

When you start to let them stay in the same cage, only do it during the day.  Because they are nocturnal, they'll be most awake at night and more likely to fight at night.  So let them stay together during the day and then separate them at night.  After a few days and no fighting, it's safe to let them stay in the same cage over night.  Just make sure to check on them so nothing bad happens.
