Question:

Help with sponsoring a child?

I want to sponsor a child from World Vision but how can I find out their circumstances before I sponsor them? My grandma sponsored a child once but found out the girl goes to school, has electricity, a house, and other things that were quite unexpected, as my gran really wanted to help a child with no benefits and was really struggling. I understand WHY they dont tell us on the net - for privacy and so that people cant say 'he's too well-off, i wont sponsor him', but i really want to help a kid like the ones i see on ads or something.

Help?

  1. I have been sponsoring a child from Child Fund Australia for several years now. The family were living in a 1 roomed dirt hut with no water or electricity. I sent them money over the years and they have built a second room. My child is now a teenager and is fully educated and in good health. The sponsorship will finish when she leaves school. I get letters and photos from her including a report on her studies and health. Child Fund is good as the child receives 80% of what you send them, as opposed to World Vision where the child receives a lot less. The international website is http://www.christianchildrensfund.org/

I am also sponsoring a child in Afganistan. There are few agencies that can get in there to do this, but there is a lady here in Australia that has contacts. Her name is Mahboba and her site is http://www.mahbobaspromise.org/content.c...

  2. There are other places to sponsor children as well.  Look locally to see if yuo can sponsor a child or make a one-time donation that will directly benefit a child.

The Child Advocacy Team is a Michigan nonprofit firm which provides legal and advocacy services to underpriviledged children in Genesee County, Michigan.  In addition, there are special projects which are undertaken which benefits only to the truly neediest children in the communities that they serve.  Special Projects include GEAR UP FOR SCHOOL, where school supplies are collected and distributed to children in foster care and to underpriviledged children; CHRISTMAS HOPE, where Christmas presents are collected and distributed to children in foster care and to underpriviledged children who would not otherwise receive a gift; PROJECT PREEMIE, where preemie clothing, blankets, bottles and other preemie-specific items are delivered to local hospitals in December; EASTER BASKET PARADE, where items for Easter Baskets are collected and made into Baskets for children in the foster care system and children who are underprivileded and who would not otherwise receive an Easter Basket; WEE CARE TOTES, where toiletries and personal hygiene items are collected and put into a tote, which is then handed out to children entering the foster care system, and to children in need and distress; the CHRISTMAS STOCKING PROJECT, where Christmas Stocking are made for underpriviledged children, at-risk youth, and children in foster care.  The list goes on and on.  The organization provides free clothing, baby formula, books and other necessary items to children who are in the foster care system due to chronic neglect, abuse or abandonment as well as to at-risk children and underpriviledged children.  The entire donated item or dollar amount is given directly to a child or family in need.  The Child Advocacy Team does not charge and, in-fact, covers all overhead associated with these Special Projects.

I am sure that you can find something similiar in your area.  Children do go hungry in America.  There are children who do not have access to decent reading materials (let alone actually own a book).  There are children with tattered clothing and shoes with no soles.  There are children who do not go to school because they are embarrassed by a lack of clothing, shoes and school supplies.  Help a child in your area out by seeking organizations in your area that serve the truly needy. If you cannot find one, check out the Child Advocacy Team ("CAT") at http://www.l-gal.org and if you have any questions, send and email to me at kbunker@l-gal.org
