The question "Do you have an internet connection at home?" was put to a number of people in a small country in Europe. The data is shown below.

Living in cities

Population: 30%

Sample (number): 500

Answer "Yes" (number): 220

Living outside cities

----------------------------

Population: 70%

Sample (number): 700

Answer "Yes" (number): 70

What percentage had an internet connection of the whole population?

  1. 220/500 is 44%

    so 44% of the city has internet

    70/700 is 10%

    so 10% of the rural has internet.

    then you take 44% of 30, so 13.2% of all the internet is in the city

    and now take 10% of 70, so 7% of all the internet is in the rural

    add up those last two percents, and you get 13.9%

    so 13.9% of the country has an internet connection
