they have asked me if i have financially supported myself for the apst 3 years.why have they asked me this? wwill this increase or reduce my maintenance grant?

if u have financially supported yourself , that may lead to lower maintenance grant, but maintenance grant depend on you household income in total, so it might not make any different.
