Question:

Help with tennis rules?

I am learning how to play tennis and I love the sport! But I am a little confused with the rules and set-up.

I have two questions:

1) If the ball lands on a line, is it "in"/"good" or is it out?

2) Is the space separating the doubles side line and the singles side line called the "alley"?

Thank you for your help!

  1. 1) it is in

    2) yes

  2. 1. If the ball hits the line it is in.

    2. Yes it's the alley.

  3. 1) If it hits ON the line, then it is still considered in.

    2) Yes

  4. 1: Yes, if the ball lands on ANY part of the line it is good.  This is why you see players and umpires looking at 'marks' the ball left on a clay court.  In this case the umpire/player looks for any sign that the ball "clipped" the line.

    2. Yes, or also called the "doubles alley" since it is outside the normal service side lines but beyond the singles "out zone" along the service line when playing doubles
