Does anyone have any tips to help my tennis serve - as I'm 5'4, when I hit the ball it constantly seems to hit the net - I can never get the right angle to get it into the box the other side.

Does anyone have any tips?

Thanks

  1. Your height is nothing to do with it.If you hit the net on serving, your letting the ball drop too much before impact. If you hit out, your hitting too early or ball going behind your body.Getting the right angle is not the point,Ball toss is.

Practise this instead of serve.Stand on the base line and tap the ball into the air,let bounce and hit over the net.It is exactly the same action as serving, but less thinking involved so automatic actions kick in,Arm straight on impact. If your not falling forward after serving it's wrong tecnique,Serve slowly and build up over a couple of sets.

Angles are created by body adjustments or by slight change in grip on handle

  2. Practice, practice, practice!  That is key.  But your style may reflect on your serve as well.  Try not to hit downwards on your racket, as that only makes the ball go down.  And throw your ball higher and follow through, so don't try to stop your racket mid-swing.

  3. There is a lot That could be said here but I'll keep it as simple as possible.

    -Four things.

-1, Use a continental Grip to serve with (if you don't already). May Feel weird, but it works best all around.

-2, Brush up the back of the ball from center to top right (for Right-hander) or  top left (left hander)

-3, If you hit the net a lot, try tossing the ball closer to the base line     so your racquet contacts it sooner.

If you start hitting long.. Adjust the toss to fall  more into the court.

-4. Keep your eye on the ball.

Practice a lot and Don't be afraid to experiment.

You may have to adjust your continental grip more towards the top bevel to give you more spin or you may adjust toward the Eastern grip for a more flat shot.  Start more in the middle between the two and see how that works.

You may need to find a good Coach to help you with it, but Keep at it and you'll Get it.

Don't let your size bother you because you can do it if you keep at it!  Good luck and Have Fun!

  4. The main point you should be focusing on if you are hitting the ball into the net is on hitting upwards on the ball, check that you are striking the ball at the highest comfortable point and that your ball toss is not too far forward as this will cause you to fall forward and push the ball down into the net.  Also dont practise on the base line, practise on the service line,  concentrating not on power but just hitting the ball higher to build your confidence.  I am a qualified coach and this shouldl improve your game but if you do still have difficulties a single lesson is usually all that is needed to cure this sort of problem

  5. Don't worry. Im here,

Ok bend your knees and bring the racket all the way from bottom to top so the ball will be fast and over the net, also your foot in front while serving should be pointing to the pole so it can go, and and do not forget to stand sideways never  forward so the ball will go to the other box called the volley box or service box. . Never give up keep trying different positions and ways to hit the ball and stand in different ways if it is not working. I am sure you can do it.

Throw the ball a bit higher and if its not a good toss. Dont worry you can let it bouce, it wont count.

  6. Here's what you do, it has helped me considerably.   As a youth, high school player, and jv college player at UNC, I had a pretty good serve.  So, I hadn't played much till recently, and was very disgusted with lack f a serve, and how I had forgotten the mechanics.... So, I did a Google search and found the following:

videojug.com   there, type in Serve, and watch the videos.   You can't beat them... matter of fact, they have all strokes, etc.

  7. It is hitting the net not because you are short, but because you let your toss drop down too low. You should be hitting the ball as high as yur racket is when your arm is fully extended. Hope i helped ;-)
