Help with the perfect room for a 13 year old?

I want to have a dream room, but I have no idea where to start, and what places to go. I can't be really expensive. My room isn't that big, but I hate the way it looks now. I don't want to have a room that is majorly bright, I'm a pretty laid back girl. Help!

Sorry I put this in the wrong spot =[

  1. It is in the wrong spot, but Ill help you any ways.... yard sales, thrift stores, freecycle.org (where you can ask for specific stuff for free), or craigslist.com are all great places to find great deals on stuff you might be able to use for your room.

It would help if I knew some of what you like, to give you some ideas. And it would help if you could show us your current room so we can get a feel for the space, but if you or one of your parents are handy or crafty, it should be a cinch to get creative and get a room you'll love.

In the mean time, you can try googling images of neutral teen girl rooms... just put in different things in the search engine for your preferences and see what pops up. You can consolidate ideas in to creating a room thats truly yours and shop around for good prices on items =)

  2. I like the bedding set that you picked out.. as for paint I would probably go with the green just pick a lighter shade of green that matches your comforter with white trim and white sheer curtains.  I would recommend getting lots of paint swatches and bringing them home to compare to your comforter or take a sample of material with you to the store.  As for furniture some furniture stores have "scratch & dent" furniture that is cheap and you wouldn't necessarily notice a small scratch on a bed post.  I also suggest craigslist.org for furniture and yard sales or estate sales.  White or light colored wood furniture would probably look best with the bed set you picked out.  You can also personalize your room by adding a funky lamp, a bulletin board so you can tack up pictures etc, shelves so you can put your favorite stuff on them, and throw rugs and throw pillows, maybe a comfy chair.. there are endless possibilities.. good luck and have fun!

  5. You should watch shows like Trading Spaces. Read some books or articles on decor. Go online and search for decorating tips.  By looking at pictures you can form an opinion of what you like and dislike.

Painting the walls is a good start.

Paint the furniture too if you want a different look.

    Change the drapes.

Move the furniture so it has a fresh, new feeling (feng shui).

    Change your comforter set.

Shelves can help give a new look

Figure out what colors you like and go with a very light pastel.  Colors always appear darker once the walls are painted. If you go with a dark color it's just going to make the room look smaller.

If you're paying for everything try buying at thrift stores, eBay or Walmart.  If your parents are funding the project try going to places like Bed Bath and Beyond, Pier One Imports, and Macys where they have a wide variety of linens and decor to choose from.

Painting is going to make more of an impact than anything else you do. You might want to choose your bedding set and drapes then pick your paint color to match.

Don't do anything too crazy. What you like right now might not be something you are going to like in 3 years. For example: My friend painted her walls lime green. Now she's totally sick of that color.

Edit: Best to buy the curtains where you found the comforter set. That way you know it matches.

Home Depot & Lowes have paint.  Bring your comforter with you to compare.  They have various light sources at Home Depot so you can see how your paint is going to look under natural light and florescent light....that way you can see it's true color.

As for furniture try buying used. It's much cheaper. Try www.craigslist.org

Ikea has cheap furniture as well. www.Ikea.com
