  1. You do not need anything else.

This whole "tv going digital" thing" usually refers to over the air broadcasts only. All this talk about converter box coupons and Feb 2009 only applies to people who get free TV with an antenna. In any case, your TV has a ATSC digital tuner built in

so you could just attach an antenna and get digital broadcasts.

Cable companies are planing their own going digital transitions, but this is a local matter. In any case you are as prepared as you can be.

Your TV includes a "open QAM" tuner. QAM is the type of tuner used in many digital cable systems. So it's possible that your TV can pick up some digital cable channels by directly connecting to your cable outlet. You would still need a cable box for premium "encrypted" channels. You might want to give this a try and see what you  cab pick up.

The only thing you need to do is look at your cable box. If it only has analog outputs, then you are watching SD quality video. To make use of your TV's "HD" resolution, you need either a direct cable connection or a HD cable box using either HDMI or component cables to get the HD quality video to your screen.

  2. Steve is right on.  Don't let sales people sell you something that you do not need.

  3. if you already have cable service with the cable box or if you have satellite service with a box then you do not need a digital converter box because the cable/satellite provider should have already converted over to digital signal. reason for the convertion is to free up air waves so emergency services can use it. So if your using rabbit ears or an antenna (which it sounds like you are not) then you will need the digital converter box to convert the analog signal to digital. which they will stop sending out analog TV signals Feb. 17th. But then you wont be able to get the digital signal with an analog antenna without the converter box.
