Help with these two quick math questions?

Is it: 8 - 49 x (-3)

8 - 147

= -139?

2. 5x - 3

-------- = 6x - 2

2. 5x - 3 = 6x - 2

add 2 to both sides

5x -1 = 6x

subtract 5x form both sides

-1 = x

or

1) You did the order correctly, but 8 - 49*(-3) is really 8 + (-49*-3) = 8 + 147 = 155.  

2) Is that (5x - 3) / 2 = 6x - 2?  If so, then this is:

5x - 3 = 2(6x - 2)

5x - 3 = 12x - 4

-3 = 12x - 5x - 4

-3 = 7x - 4

-3 + 4 = 7x

1 = 7x

x = 1/7
