a. The doctor orders a Heparin drip to be initiated per DVT/PE protocol. THe protocol reads: initiate a Heparin drip at 16 units per kilogram per hour (25,000 units Heparin in 250 ml D5W = 100units per ml). The patient weighs 110 lbs. How many units/hour would you st the IV pump at?

b. THe PTT is less than 55 seconds. The protocol reads to increase the drip by 4 units per kilogram per hour. How many units/hour would you set the pump at?

  1. Convert the lbs to kgs.110 lbs:2.2=50 kg

    Hep drip 16 U/kg/hr:50X16=800

    800 U/hr (or 16 gtts/min)

    Good luck

    PS: Oh, part 2:

    4 U/kg/hr

    200 U/hr (or 4 gtts/min)

    Set the machine to 20 gtts/min (16+4)
