  1. you will want a horse that is at least over 15 hands high. I would say anywheres from 15.5 to 16 hands as you may still grow a couple inches in height and you want a horse that will last you for awhile.

AS far as which horse, well there are many many different breeds

    and many disciplines

you will want a horse that is matched to your style riding (english/western) and you will also want one that is suited for your level of expierience

if your a beginner then you want a beginner horse

you dont want to get a horse that is above your riding level because it will be too much horse for you to handle, and you and the horse will get frustrated and you may end up with some injuries.

The best thing you can do is find someone that deals with horses and training - someone good that isnt just going to try and push a specific horse on you because they want the money, but someone that knows your riding abillity and can work with you to match you up to the right horse -

as far as the breed of horse,do some research and study up on the different breeds.

A thoroughbred is going to be fast because they are bred for speed, and arabian is very high spirited

an appaloosa is very laid back

a quarter horse is a good all around horse, but not too  great when it comes to a lot of jumping

  2. 15hh to 17hh

    arabian, thoroughbred....

  3. Sounds like you should be looking for a horse around 15 hh or bigger.  You will want one who will suit you for the next several years, and you might still grow a couple inches.

As for breeds - at your age I would avoid the "hot-blooded" breeds, such as  thoroughbreds and most Arabians.  You might find a more docile Arabian, but I would go 10+ on age and find one very well trained.  Or you'd likely do well with a cross-bred horse, throroughbred/Quarter Horse, or Arab/QH, something to tone down the natural excitability of the hot-blooded breeds.

Warmbloods, such as Dutch Warmblood or Hanovarian might be an option for you if you can find one reasonably priced.  Morgans or Andalusians tend to be smaller in height (15.2 is around average) but are usually athletic, intelligent, and sensible - they make excellent all-round horses.

Quarter Horse, Paints, Pintos and Appaloosas also tend to be quite good all-round event horses, again by nature lacking the excitability factor found in thoroughbreds and arabians.

I'm also a fan of unregistered horses - best horse I ever had was a grade mare, we did western and english events, everything from jumping and dressage to trail and gymkhana.

So, if I were you, I would set a height, age and price range, and not be too concerned about the breed if you find a horse that fits.

  4. Why not a nice 15 or2- 3 hand horse, Cob Mix would do you nicely

  5. I would say any breed that is around 15hh

  6. 15 hands

  7.    I get this question from students and barn friends alike, all of the time. Don't worry about breed, age or size too much.

Most importantly look for a horse that you feel confident on and is already trained to do what you want, especially since not all horses jump 3ft+ fences.

Find a horse that has been at that level for awhile. My best horse ever way an Arabian/Quarter horse cross and only 15hh. Since it sounds like you are going to be tall, go with something at least 15 hands, or you will out grow your new horse too quickly. Breed doesn't matter. My best friend has an Appaloosa x Welsh x Tennessee Walker Cross. Horable at Dressage since he does the gated thing, but WILL jump any 4 ft fence you point him at.
