Help with this question, please? Need to know if they would be covered on my policy??

I am currently insured through State Farm-I have full coverage on my 2006 Corolla. I have some friends whose car is in the shop and they are scheduled to go on vacation next week. I want to let them use my car. Would my policy cover them? They have insurance through Geico-but since they are not listed on my policy can they use my car?

And if so, do I have to get a temporary card or something for them to take with them? We live in Texas-they are planning on going to Florida for a week.

thanks everyone!!

  1. The only way to know for sure is to contact your car insurance agent.

Most likely, they will be covered as long as they are properly licensed.  But a call to your agent will tie up all the loose ends for you and give you peace of mind.

  2. In Texas, liability follows the VEHICLE first, then the driver.

If you have given permission for your friends to drive your vehicle, they would have coverage, up to your limits.  Since they aren't tenants in your home, they really don't need to be listed as drivers.  However, be prepared for State Farm to give you a whole questionaire as to why they were driving, etc, if they do have an accident.  That's to be expected.

Their policy could also cover under their liability section, as its considered a 'temporary substitute'.  I'm not sure of Geico's guidelines on this, however, so you may want to check into that as well.

  3. "Full coverage" means minimum liability, collision, and comp. It does NOT mean you are fully covered!!

You need to call your agent and make sure.  I'd say, the safe thing to do, is add them as drivers, assuming they're using the car for less than a week.  But any accident they have, YOU PAY THE DEDUCTIBLE!  If they give you any money to borrow your car, there's NO COVERAGE!!

I have a TX State Farm policy.  MY policy would cover my car, for anyone who drives it.  And it covers MY liability.  There's no "temporary card".  Your regular insurance card is all you need.  But, and a big one!  Florida is a NO FAULT state!  If they get hurt in your car, YOUR POLICY isn't going to pay, and the other person's policy isn't going to pay, either.

  4. Simply... Liability follows the driver and comp and coll follow the vehicle. As long as they have your permission to drive your car you and your vehicle are protected!! They need to have liability insurance though... if they hit someone their insurance would pay for the damages they caused to the other vehicle and then SF would pay to fix your car and subrogate against your friends insurance!! You dont have to add them as drivers to you policy though...

Good question... insurance is confusing sometimes!!
