Help with this simple math question please.?

If a problem says solve, for example

IxI = 2x + 3

do you out both answers or just one, would it be wring to put both answers, my worcksheet says solve, so im not sure if i have to find the specific x or just put what the answers is.

  1. The  absolute value of a number can be considered as the  distance between 0 and that number on the real number line.

    x=2x+3

    subtract 2x from both sides

    -x = 3

    x = -3

    |x| = |3|


  2. I think you have to consider 2 cases,one when x>0

    & the other when x<0;

    Then you will get result(s).

  3. The answers are the values of x (or whatever variable you have) that make the equation true.  So you should put all of these values that work, and don't put values that don't work.

    Bottom line: check your answers!

    Yes, solve for x (any and all), and then make sure that they work in the original equation.

    For instance, in the example given, x = -1 works and is the only solution; x = -3 does not work, but you should show that you calculated it, checked it, but it is not a solution.  Your teacher should tell / show you how they want you to do this...

  4. you must solve for x=2x+3, and x=-(x+3)

    you get x=3 and x=-1

    x=3 doesnt work so the answer is x=-1
