Question:

Help with window sill rot. Are vinyl caps OK?

I have failed window seals and need replacements. Some have minor rot in the sills. I've been told I could cut out the rot, seal with epoxy, and cap with vinyl. I've never heard of this. Will I be asking for more problems this way or is new construction the safer way to go?

  1. As a landlord I have had this problem myself and first tried this method about 5 years ago. I have had no problems on any of the repairs where  I have used this technique. I don't cap with vinyl though, I use the roll type metal flashing that you would use on a roof and shape it to fit.

  2. minwax makes a wood hardener for rotted wood its a not an epoxy though you just saturate the rotted aria and wait till it cures ten you can cap it or paint it witch ever you chose
