why were the Assyrians such formidable conquerors?

  1. They really weren't until Tiglat-Pileser (1116-1090) came into play. Under him they were able to expand to Syria and Armenia. Then they really got going in about 883-824 conquerors. When they took over someplace they would force the people to move to new parts of the Empire in order to keep down revolts and keep their new taken land. The cultural mixing made it hard for any one culture to make a real large area of influence. Therefore they could keep their kingdom without having too much trouble (or so they thought). But just like everyone else they eventually fell.
