  1. This is the Windows Update Manager file.

it has become corrupt so try to copy it from your Windows XP CD.

  2. wuauclt is the Windows Updates Automatic Update Client.  It sounds like a recently loaded update or software package may have messed it up, or it may be missing a file or something.

It is a useful service running in Windows, but if you absolutely HAVE to stop it, you can right click My Computer, click Manage.

Click the Services and Applications section in the left pane, then click the Services section under that.

Find Automatic Updates in the list in the right pane, right click it and click stop. To prevent it from starting again when you reboot your PC, right click it in the list and click properties. There, set the startup type to disabled.

It might be better to have someone look at it though to see if you could fix the problem, rather than repair the symptom .

  3. That is the Windows Update process. For some reason your system is having trouble with your Automatic Updates utility, and it is closing it out to stop any further harm to your system. Sometimes this can occur if your drivers are out of date, but it could be anything. Because this is an Automatic Update issue you can receive free assistance from Microsoft to help correct it. Here is a link where you can access the web form used to contact Microsoft professionals who will help you with this issue:

    http://www.microsoft.com/athome/support/...

Click on the Microsoft Product Support Services, and then fill in each question. Once you get to the portion that has to do with Automatic Updates, you should receive a message that you may be entitled to free support. Be sure to fill in exactly what OS you use, the nature of the issue, the component that keeps closing out, in your case Automatic Updates or wuauclt.exe, finish the form and Microsoft technician will email you to assist in about 24 hours. You will also receive a confirmation notice letting you know your issue was received and a support technician will be contacting you soon.

Good luck and have a nice day.

  4. it is windows auto update

I developed this problem recently, as well... the Generic Host Process error only comes up sometimes, but the wuauclt.exe error won't go away on startup, and sometimes comes back randomly later while the computer is on.

For some reason, today, for the first time since this problem began, the error report redirected me to this Microsoft Windows Error Reporting page , naming antivirus software as the related error.

    HUH?

So I tried turning off my AV software (Trend Micro Antivirus, which has solved a whole lot of errors for me in the past) and restarted. Same error. So I manually disabled everything through Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services, and restarted yet again...

    NO ERROR.

I don't know if it's Trend Micro specifically, or antivirus software in particular, but there is definitely some odd conflict happening between these two items because I have yet to receive the wuauclt.exe error, or any other errors, since disabling this.
