Help working a samsung dvd recorder?

I just set up my new samsung dvd recorder R120, but it is so confusing, if anyone could help, i would be very greatful...I hooked the input cord it came with to box the recorder and my cox cable digital recordering box like it should be, plugged the power cord in to the wall...it turns on and off...I was reading the instruction guide online and i'm even my confused...one of the steps says Press the Input Selector on your TV remote control until the signal from the DVD Recorder appears on the screen. I keep pressing the input button, and it doesn't find it....

Your description is a little confusing.  You have to connect the your cable line to your cable box.  Your cable box has to be connected to your DVD recorder.  Your DVD Recorder has to be connected to your TV.  Once they are all connected, you have to make sure to turn on your cable box and your DVD recorder or your TV won't get any channels.  Make sure you are selecting the input/source for your DVD recorder and not the cable box.  If you have an HDTV, it can take a few seconds for your TV to switch between sources/inputs so wait a few seconds between selecting sources to while your TV tries to sync up with your input signals.
