I need to know what number + 3% would equal 40,000.

How would I go about working this out?

Eventually what I need to do is work out three numbers, the final number being 40,000 with a three percent increase between them.

An simple example of that would be -

100 (plus 3%) makes 103

then 103 (plus 3%) makes 106.09

  1. Let x be the number.

    x+ 0.03 x =40,000

    0.03 x is 3 % of x or 3/100 times x

    1.03x =40,000

    x=40,000 / 1.03 = 38,834.95

    i.e. 38,834.95 + 3 % of 38,834.95 = 40,000

  2. say that x is the number you look for.

    remember that 3% = 3/100 = 0.03.

    what you know is that : x + 3% x = 40,000

    x( 1+ 0.03) = 40,000

    x * 1.03 = 40,000

    x = 40,000 / 1.03 = 38,834. 95.

  3. 40'000 / 1.03 = 38'834.95

    38'834.95 / 1.03 = 37'703.84

    37'703.84 / 1.03 = 36605.67
